Research Outline as a Control Artifact

An explicit outline between research and drafting exposes coverage for evaluation and controls how evidence is retrieved for generation.

In a long-form research workflow, build and evaluate a multi-level outline before drafting. Start with a parametric outline as a general organizing frame, then refine it from the gathered research so topic-specific evidence elaborates the structure instead of arriving as an undifferentiated retrieval dump.

The outline is both an intermediate quality proxy and an execution plan. It shows whether research achieved adequate coverage before expensive generation, and each section can drive section-scoped evidence retrieval. Removing this stage can degrade both organization and grounded article quality even when the underlying research conversations remain available.
